01.11.02 Statement
On January 11, 2002 I started this series. With camera in hand, I drove the 18 mile route I have driven 3 times a week for the past 9 years. I took 135 pictures during the 40 minute trip, using the same blind technique I had used in the 11.01.01 series.
Over the next 11 months I arranged, cropped, and printed the eighty pieces presented. Working each one individually in whatever manner seemed appropriate at the time, in no set order. They are presented, however, sequentially, from trip start to finish.
I used a limited palette of materials; water, acrylic media and white, pencils in graphite and white. Three types of paper stock were used; heavy watercolor (of unknown origin), Rives BFK white, and Rives BFK off-white.
This turned out to be a great experience for me, although grueling at times. With so many images available, they lost their preciousness, denying me the time and inclination to ponder any piece very long, just keep moving. I could try anything and everything. The results, individually, are some good and some bad. Viewed in its entirety, the work accomplished its goal, a year's re-education.
